Views of Stockholm
Central Stockholm offers many great lookouts where you can enjoy views of Sweden’s beautiful capital. Here are some of the top ones.
Söder Mälarstrand
A walk along Söder Mälarstrand at sunset is hard to beat. Looking towards the City Hall with the sky at its finest is a truly magical experience. Well worth capturing on your camera.
Admire the views from Katarinavägen
The lookout on Katarinavägen at the north end of Södermalm island looks out over Gamla Stan, Skeppsholmen and Djurgården. There are some amazing views from here, with boats and big ships cruising by.
Lunch with a view
Whether or not you’re into modern art, we recommend lunch or ‘fika’ in the Moderna Museet restaurant. It offers one of Stockholm’s best views of Djurgården, through a huge glass wall.
Skinnarviksberget lookout
On Södermalm island, we recommend Skinnarviksberget lookout to get a great view of Stockholm. Perfect for a picnic in fine company!
Excursions
There’s a lot to experience and discover in Stockholm and its environs. Here are just a few suggestions.
Rosendals Trädgård
A lovely garden to visit for a day, whatever the season. It often hosts activities for families with children.
The Hallwyl Museum
Enjoy a guided or unguided tour in this national museum of cultural history, showing what a wealthy home looked like at the turn of last century. If you go on the guided tour, you also get to see the top floor and more of the house. After your visit, we recommend taking the tram to Waldemarsudde to stroll through the beautiful park.
Vaxholm
In the warmer months, the archipelago town of Vaxholm is a lovely place for a day out with a nice jetty, little boutiques and some excellent restaurants. Boats leave from Strömkajen and Nybrokajen and take between 45 and 75 minutes.
The Fredhäll Rocks
At the western end of Kungsholmen island, you’ll find these lovely waterside rocks. With their south-west location, these bare rocks get the sun all day long, and you can watch the sunset later on. Take a picnic, a nice bottle of wine and maybe even a portable barbecue, and enjoy a balmy summer’s evening. And don’t forget to take your swimming stuff for a dip in the water. Get there by taking the Green metro line west. Get off at Kristineberg, walk through the tunnel and take a right towards the water. You’ll be there in just a few minutes.

Walking tip 1
Walk along Strandvägen to the bridge over to Djurgården, or take the tram. Stop on the bridge and enjoy the stunning view. The current bridge was finished in 1896, the same year the Freys brand was established. Walk across the bridge and turn left. After five minutes you’ll be at Flickorna Helin. Enjoy coffee with a homemade pastry, or a delicious lunch at this delightful café in the old Skånska Gruvan building. If you’re up for some singing, dancing and nostalgia, the brilliant ABBA Museum is just a stone’s throw away. From here you can carry on to Gamla Stan on the Djurgården Ferry (use your SL ticket or pass), or take the tram back to Hamngatan and visit the Hallwyl Museum, a grand old home with collections of art, weapons and antiquities. The museum also has interesting temporary exhibitions. In the summer you can finish off with a drink in the museum’s lovely courtyard.
Walking tip 2
Walk to the Drottninggatan shopping street and head down towards Gamla Stan, passing the Royal Palace on the way. If you like, stop and see the guards’ parade and experience the small alleyways. When you reach the end of Gamla Stan, at Slussen, you can take a ferry to Djurgården, home to the Vasa Museum, Skansen open-air museum and zoo, and Gröna Lund theme park. This will all keep you busy for hours. On the way back, take the metro to T-centralen and finish off with a short walk back to the hotel. This will take up an entire day and show you many different parts of central Stockholm.
Picnic on Djurgården
Take the bus a way beyond Skansen and Gröna Lund on the green island of Djurgården. When you get off walk towards the water and find your own perfect spot. There are many green parks and waterside rocks to enjoy in Stockholm and they’re all great for picnics – please ask at reception for more information.
